Market-Bought Items: Care & Guidance
-
What you’re receiving
Each item is a dormant bulb, tuber, or rhizome which is an underground structure holding everything the plant needs to grow and flower.
When to plant
Plant in spring, once the risk of frost has passed and the soil has begun to warm.
Where to plant
Most varieties prefer full sun and soil that drains well.
Containers are equally suitable, provided excess water can escape freely. How to plant
Planting depth is based on size:
Depth: 2–3× the height of the bulb
Spacing: allow room for mature spread (generally 6–18")
Orientation: growing tip facing up (or plant sideways if unclear)
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil.
Watering
Keep soil evenly moist during active growth, but never saturated.
Bulbs are far more likely to fail from excess water than from dryness.Care during growth
Water consistently as plants establish.
Remove spent blooms where applicable.
Support taller stems if needed.Allow foliage to remain after flowering as it is restoring energy for the next cycle.
Containers
Use a well-draining potting mix and a container sized to the mature plant.
Larger groupings create a more natural, abundant effect. After flowering
In warmer climates, many varieties can remain in the ground.
In colder regions, lift and store once foliage has died back.A note on success
Sunlight and drainage are the foundation.
When those are right, everything else follows.Need a more tailored approach?
